Rail shipping, also known as piggyback or intermodal, is a cost effective method of shipping commodities in truckload which are not time sensitive. Intermodal is simply putting the trailer or ocean container on a flat rail car and moving it by train. Although shipping by rail can be less expensive than over the road trucking, rail has a longer transit time. Rail is the preferred mode for shippers looking for the cheapest way to move a long distance shipment, and is more concerned about cost than delivery time.
