Sometimes you require service for shipments that do not fill an entire truck. There are carriers who service this type of shipment exclusively. Less-Than-Truckload or LTL carriers use the National Motor Freight Classification(NMFC) to determine the class of the commodities being shipped. The NMFC determines “class” using a commodity’s weight, density, value, and loading characteristics. As an example a 5,000 pound shipment of bricks will take up less or a truck than a 5,000 pound shipment of feathers. Usually, higher density freight carries a lower class rate than lower density freight.
